Featured Seller: It’s Not Gold

It’s time to start up the weekly Featured Seller posts!  As an undiscovered Etsy seller myself, I feel it’s important to help promote my fellow Etsians to showcase their work as well.  You’ll see these featured seller posts each Thursday, which will give a little personality of the seller as well as some photos and links so you can find out everything about them.  If you’re interested in being featured, send me a convo through Etsy to get all the details.

Today’s Featured Seller is It’s Not Gold, check out her shop here for all her jewelry and she also has a shop for her illustrations here.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you came to be an Etsy crafter?
I’m Susana, a 28 years old Portuguese, born in the beautiful Lisbon, where I still live, in a historic part of the city.
I worked a few years with tiles and restoration ( I still do a bit), but I’m starting to work as an illustrator. I’m already starting to work internationaly, to Japan. It’s great!
I’ve heard about Etsy through other blogs, and first started as a buyer and then opened my jewelry shop. I started taking jewelry more seriously in my late teens. Almost everyone says they started making jewelry for friends and then for selling, but for me it was the other way around. I looked at jewelry as a opportunity business, still making something I enjoyed. Later also opened my illustration shop.

1What makes your products better than your competition?
I would not dare to say my products are better that the competition, there are such amazing artists out there!
I always try to make something different, yet with quality and I love to experiment with diverse medias. My work is very colourful.

What item are you most proud of?
Hard question…I’m proud of both my In Stitches and Clay Collections. I loved to make the metal sewing machine bobbins necklace and all that as a bit of illustration on it!

What do you do when you aren’t crafting?
I spend my time with my cute and insane dog Mingas, hang out with my friends, read and listen to music a lot. I even like to watch horror movies, (the first I saw as a kid was ‘Nosferatu’) but then for a few hours, especially if it is night, I’m scared of my own shadow! I love to cook, and I’m quite good at it! I really like to go out for a walk by myself and find it very inspirational to observe other people.

When did you first start making handmade products?

I’ve been knitting and crocheting since I was 7, and sewing since about 11 or 12. I started making handmades as a career move in Summer 2009. I was knitting small coin purses and tams for a local art shop. Then in July, I opened an Etsy shop. But I didn’t really start to focus on stocking and promoting it until November.

What makes your products unique?

You know, I remember the days of grand old department stores — Bergdorf’s, Macy’s, Marshall Field’s here in Chicago– when you walked in and just felt this sense of excitement and amazement because everywhere you looked there was something wonderful to look at. That’s the feeling I’m trying to create with my shop. A feeling of, “Oh look, they have THIS here!” I’m looking to fit in somewhere between luxury and flea market. Things that are unique and artistic, but not expensive. My knits are functional, but also artistic. I don’t know how unique a knitted hat is, but I think it makes my shop unique. This totally goes against all the advice out there to pick a niche, or signature product and focus on it. I’ve never been one for focusing on any one thing for long. LOL.

What item are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of the Les Oiseaux Needle-felted Tote Bag. It was a labor of love from hand knitting the body of the bag, picking out the leather handles and painstakingly reproducing these wonderful watercolors by J.J. Audubon. I think it turned out looking all at once modern and a little old fashioned.

a2What’s your goal for the new year?
My goal for the new year is 500 sales. Seems like a long shot to me at the moment when I’m at 4 sales, but I’m determined to make being an Etsy seller a full time career and 500 sales this year would be a good start towards that.

Why should someone buy your products?

Someone should buy my products if they consider themselves to be maybe a little artsy, odd at times, and delighted by unexpected details.

Here’s your chance to pimp your online persona (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.).
I am totally pimping on Facebook: http://facebook.com/posymoe and Twitter: http://twitter.com/posymoe and I have a blog that is about knitting and crafting with fibers, but other things pop up there all the time. I am, after all, a lover of the sometimes odd. Pocketfulla Posy Blog:http://pocketfullaposy.squarespace.com

Featured Seller – Megan’s Menagerie

This week’s featured seller – Megan’s Menagerie!!

xmas

She has the cutest holiday banner in her shop right now, I just had to post it here.  This store has a lot that you would want.  From jewelry, to hair clips, to cowls, to coffee cup cozies and even crayons?!  Lots of pretty, cute and fuzzy things in this shop which make me feel warm and cozy this time of year.

new1

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Megan. I’m a 26 year old mom, wife, and full-time Nursing student. Having been born and raised in New Jersey, I’ve always had huge amounts of inspiration in my life. With New York City to the north, the mountains to the west, casinos to the south, and the beach to the east, inspiration is not hard to come by.

When did you first start making handmade products?
I have always been really creative and enjoy working with my hands. My grandmother and mother taught me how to crochet and I really enjoy doing that. I started learning when I was about 9 and still enjoy it to this day! I find it very very relaxing to unwind by creating!
What makes your products unique?

I feel that most of my products are unique! I strive very hard to make sure everyone can afford my work! I promise that you cannot beat my prices!
What item are you most proud of?

The item I am most proud of? I would have to say my cowls! They are so pretty and affordable! Everyone goes nuts for them! I just really started getting into them so there are more to come!

new2What’s your goal for the upcoming year?

I don’t really have a goal for the upcoming year. I guess I just want to continue on the path I’m on and bring people my work! I would however love to do a craft show! Never done one before and really really want too!

Here’s your chance to pimp your online persona (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.).

Anything else we should know?

I love to spend time with my family. I figure skate competitively. I love to read and craft any chance I get. I love food! My husband cooks at work so when he’s home he doesn’t do it that often so its a real treat for me when he does because I love to eat!

Go on over and check out her shop!  I’m sure you’ll find something that sparks your interest! :)

Featured Seller – Valerie Tyler Designs

One thing you can definitely find on Etsy is jewelry.  It is the category that has the most items on Etsy which means the most competition.  Searching for something you’re looking for can take a long time due to the pages and pages of results that will come up for you.  While Etsy is overloaded with jewelry, it is also overloaded with some great artists and great products.  You will see pieces you just fall in love with and things you didn’t even know where possible with jewelry.  Valerie Tyler is a great example of quality products on Etsy and she has been around long enough to have an idea of what she is doing – look at her sales!

ear

Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a jewelry designer who also happens to be a full-time teacher. I live near a national park, in a suburb of Cleveland and therefore have an interesting dichotomy of both natural and industrial influences.

When did you first start making handmade products?
Over 10 years ago I did the whole “play with beads” thing, and took a jewelry course in college. I started my official jewelry business though about 3 years ago after I got married and finished grad school. I’ve sold on Etsy for a little over 2 years.
What makes your products unique?
My products are a unique blend of modern aesthetic with influences of nature. I like to combine sleek geometric patterns with the more gentler shapes of natural elements.

What item are you most proud of?
I think right now my favorite item is my Butterflies in Flight necklace, as the piece is entirely handsawn, and I think the 3D nature of it came out well. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=34479295

What’s your goal for the upcoming year?
I’d like to double the zen nature collection with a lot more handsawn pieces, and come up with some more interesting 3 dimensional metalwork ideas. I’d also really like enough money to save up for a kiln so I can play with some PMC or enamel. In addition it would be nice to successfully get through art show application time. That’s always a lot of work!

neck

Why should someone buy your products?
My products are a perfect match for someone who wants quality, handmade jewelry, at a fair price. In addition some pieces can be quite sizable and eye catching, or petite and simple enough for everyday wear.

Visit my shop and mention this blog and I’ll add in a little free gift with any purchase over $25.

Those earrings I posted a picture of?  LOVE THEM!  There are over a hundred items in her shop and all of them are great.  Who doesn’t need jewelry?  Who doesn’t know someone that would want a necklace as a gift?  You know Valentine’s Day is just around the corner!!  Get your butts into this shop and check out all of the great and affordable jewelry Valerie has to offer!  And look at that, she’s even willing to give you a little free gift just for reading this!  What more could you ask for?! :)

Featured Seller – Jessie Grace

Another week and another featured seller.  Here is a great store of something every woman needs – purses!  Purses really are like shoes aren’t they?  You can never have enough!

Welcome Jessie Grace and check out her shop!!

redpurse

Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a 22-year-old student at the University of Florida majoring in Speech Pathology. I really want to work with older adults who have had a stroke or who have dementia and have related language difficulties. I’m going to be graduating this December and hope to start graduate school next fall.

When did you first start making handmade products?

I have been making a few Halloween costumes and doing minor clothing repairs for a couple of years now. I made a Princess Daisy (from the Mario Brothers games) costume this Halloween, and made a simple drawstring purse to go with it. I found making the purse to be really fun for some reason, so a week or so later I decided to try making a “real” purse. I had a blast and haven’t been able to stop.

What makes your products unique?
My products are unique because of the joy that goes into making them. I don’t sell purses to augment my income; I sell purses because I love making them and can’t afford the habit! I love almost everything about making purses, from selecting fabric and notions all the way to packaging them for shipment. The only part I don’t like is all the ironing!

What item are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my White Rose Peach Purse, because it’s the first “real” purse I ever made. It took me almost 10 hours from drafting the pattern to trimming the thread ends, and I am so proud of all the effort and care that went into it.
whitepurse
What’s your goal for the upcoming year?
My goal for the next year is to learn as much about sewing as possible, particularly pattern-making. Since I will be graduating this fall and can’t start graduate school until next fall, I will have a lot of downtime. And I’m self-taught, so there is a lot I still don’t know about sewing. I’d love to be able to do new and different things with my bags and maybe branch out into other sewing projects. For example, I’d love to be able to make clothes with my own patterns.

Why should someone buy your products?
I think people buy my products because they are spunky. I have an affinity for fun prints and girly shapes, and my purses definitely reflect that. My purses are youthful and fun, and they are great for ladies of all ages. But beyond the way they look, they are well-made. Even though I am still relatively new to sewing, I take my time to make sure that my projects are as professional as possible. And if you don’t believe it just because I say it, you can trust my return policy – if you’re not satisfied, you can return any of my products for a refund.

Here’s your chance to pimp your online persona (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.).
I have a Facebook page – http://www.facebook.com/JessieGraceDesigns

Anything else we should know?
My purses are made in a smoke-free home. I do have pets, but all purses are thoroughly lint-rolled before they are wrapped!

clutch

I have to say, as someone who can’t even hem my pants without it looking like a kid did it, I really admire people that can sew.  And here is proof that a pile of material and some thread can make a beautiful product you would proudly display on your arm.  I think these are just great and very affordable as well!  Thanks so much for sharing your talent with us and I wish you the best of luck in the coming year!!

Featured Seller – The Pink Camellia

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Amy. I’m a thirty-something year old career girl here in the SF Bay Area, and opened up shop on Etsy in April 2009.
When did you first start making handmade products?
I’ve been making handmade gifts for so long, I don’t think I could actually say exactly when I started. I began by making & giving gift baskets to friends & family. For my brothers wedding, I made all of the gift/welcome baskets for all of his guests. So many strangers came up to me at the wedding and commented that I should open up a business, I was a bit shocked that something I made, something so fun & natural for me, was such a big hit! I’ve since branched out into baby gifts and the other various items you see in my shop today.

What makes your products unique?
What makes my products unique is that I try very hard to make original gifts that you can’t find anywhere else. I like to put my own spin on things, add my own special touches. And I wouldn’t sell anything that I wouldn’t be proud to buy or give to a loved one myself.

What item are you most proud of?
It’s tough to say which item I’m most proud of, since I tend to create items in waves. By that I mean I do a big batch of something one day when I have an idea, and then I move on to something else, and replenish if necessary. Most recently I’ve come up with some “Baby Washcloth Sushi” that was inspired by my dinner one night! I really like the way they came out!

clutch

What’s your goal for the upcoming year?

For the upcoming year, I’d like to expand my business by doing some wholesale work, or getting into some boutiques. I’ve never done a craft show either, so I’d like to break that barrier and see how my products do at a local show or two.

Why should someone buy your products?

Why should someone buy my products? Because they’re high quality, make great gifts, are really really cute, and will bring a smile to someone’s face the second they open the box!

Here’s your chance to pimp your online persona (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.).

I do have a Facebook fan page and a Twitter account…here’s the details:

This is such an adorable shop!  She has TONS of items and some are so freakin’ creative I was just amazed (like these adorable washcloth cupcakes pictured above)!  I can’t wait until I have a baby and can buy from her.  Not only does she have great products but she has perfect gifts.  Know someone that is having a baby?  There are some great baby shower items here.  Please check out her shop and try not to spend all your money for the babies in your life! :)

I’m revamping my Featured Seller series of blog posts to try and show off my fellow artisans.  I’ve asked my featured sellers to give me responses to a few questions so you can not only read what I think about their shop, but you can also get a little info directly from them.  If you’d like to be featured please visit this forum thread to get all the details.

So now, check out the Two Cheeky Monkeys shop (love the name by the way):

1

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a stay-at-home mum of two little ones and I used to work as a research scientist. I have always loved to craft (my mum is rather arty and my dad is quite creative too) and besides making jewellery, love to sew and make paper craft of various sorts.
When did you first start making handmade products?
I have been making handmade products for years but didn’t start doing this seriously until I had my kids and wanted a way to entertain myself (and them) at home. It took over a year of making presents for friends and family before they convinced me that I should try selling my jewelery.

What makes your products unique?
I think the eclectic nature of the pieces I make is what makes them unique. I love to use vintage beads and findings but also frequently use more modern beads in my work too. And I love to mix up modern and vintage beads/findings within the same piece. Many of my pieces are OOAK too.

What item are you most proud of?
Oooh, that’s a hard one. I think that depends on my mood and how I’m being inspired at the time. I am currently love the Margarita necklaces, but I think the Tabitha choker is the one I love the best as the idea has been in my head for a while, I just needed the time to sit down and make it!

2

What’s your goal for the upcoming year?

My goal is to get to more markets next year (I’m doing my first one next week) as well as to get better at promoting my store. I would also love to start blogging but am not sure I’m ready for that yet.

Why should someone buy your products?
I’d like to think that my jewellery and accessories are well-made pieces at reasonable prices. I shop around to make sure that I get the best quality supplies at the best prices, which benefits my customers! Also, 10% of profits from each sale goes to Tear Australia, an aid and advocacy organization working in the developing world.

Here’s your chance to pimp your online persona (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.).

Anything else we should know?
I’m very friendly and love to receive convos and Tweets from my customers or people just wanting to say hi. The pieces in my store can often be re-made with a different metal finish or in a different colour scheme or size. All customers need to do is convo me or send me an alchemy request :) I am also open to custom orders in quantity, say for a bridal party!

3There are some great pieces in this shop!  I’ve posted pictures through this entry of a new of my favorites.  There are some great items and tons of variety since there are over 100 items.  All reasonably priced so you can afford to buy a gift for the holidays and then maybe treat yourself to something special too!  I am also very excited that she managed to not only sell her items but also give to a great organization as well.  This makes me want to do the same – I have to find a charity that I’m passionate about…

Thank you so much for being a featured seller!!  Make sure you check out this shop and help to not only show support of a great artisan but also a great charity.

Featured Seller – meredithx7

Yeah…so if you haven’t noticed, it isn’t exactly Thursday, which is when I do my featured seller post.  It was a very crazy week at work and lots going on this weekend, so…here I am trying to get out of the deep end on a Sunday night.  I apologize this didn’t get out sooner – sooooo….

Welcome Meredith!  She runs an Etsy store for friendship bracelets.  Remember when you were in junior high and made bracelets with colored string?  Yep, that’s what she makes!  A trip down memory lane for me and definitely to fond memories!  Apparently things have changed a bit in the last 15 years or so as she has some cool designs that I’m not quite sure how she does, like this one for example. And at only $4 it wouldn’t hurt you to pick up a few.

brace

She even makes them in pairs so that you and your BFF can have matching bracelets to show your love for one another. :)

match

This one looks a lot more complicated than I remember.  Like I said, much has changed over the years, this looks like a lot of work and is still only $6!

ooo

Want different colors?  Just let her know!  Feel like this takes away from the experience of making them for a friend?  She also does kits.  All the materials along with instructions so you and your BFF can make your bracelets together instead!

kitThese could make great stocking stuffers for Christmas so hurry in and check out her shop!

Featured Seller – Bowwowpet

I’m sure you can figure out by the shop name who their target audience is.  Bowwowpet is for the puppy lovers out there!  Your pooch needs gifts too!  Bowwowpet specialized in doggie collars with a variety of college sports teams.  I’m not a college sports fan, but there are plenty of fans out there that would love to show their team spirit through their pup.  Here you can find a ton of different options and also send them a message if you don’t see what you’re looking for!

collarThere’s a whole holiday section that has a bunch of cute collars for Christmas time.  Just too cute!  Wish I had a doggie so I could buy him this snowflake collar.

snowflakeNow, this is great.  Not only can you put a cute decorated collar on your dog, but now you can also put pajamas on him!!  I can’t help but giggle and awww over this photo.  PJs are great to help keep your puppy warm this winter when he has to trudge through the snow to go to the bathroom and this is just too cute!  Keep them on all year round! :)

pjsOnce your pup comes in all snowy and muddy from bouncing around outside, why not wipe their feet off with these cute paw towel wipes.

clothsDefinitely check out Bowwowpet for all your doggie needs.  Follow a great blog,  follow on Twitter, and fan on Facebook.  They travel the NC/SC/TN area to attend street festivals as well, so if you’re in that area you might just spot them!  If you do, stop by and treat your doggies to some cool handmade gifts too!  Thanks Bowwowpet!

First Featured Seller – Cantrix

necklace

I received a couple replies from fellow Etsians that would like to be featured, so here is the first.  I will continue to feature a different seller each week in the hopes that I can help spread the word on other gifted crafters.  I think we all need to support each other and do what we can to get our products and our passion out to others.  Welcome Cantrix!!

Cantrix has two stores on Etsy. The first is a jewelry shop that features hand made beaded jewelry like this beautiful necklace to the left.  She has tons of different styles and colors and really great prices.  There are plenty of options under $20 and she also sells gift certificates which can be great gifts for the upcoming holidays.

row

Her original store has been around for over a year and is primarily focused around yarn and knitting items.  Now, I’m not a big knitter, so I’m not sure exactly what goes into the process, but she sells stitch markers and row counters which seem like they would help you keep track of where you are in your knitting once you stop (wow – I really don’t know what I’m talking about do I?  Sorry! :) )  But again, she makes a ton of options in fabulous bright colors for very reasonable prices.

The shop also has great yarn to choose from – seems like a good price to this knitting illiterate and the color choices are great.  I happen to be in love with this purple one myself – would make a great scarf…if only I lived someone cold enough to wear sweaters or scarves.
yarn

Completely off the knitting topic she also sells scrapbook style greeting cards.  Scrapbooking is also a passion of mine and I hope to branch out my store to include cards as well.  She has some stunning designs and perfect prices for her cards.  This is one of my favorites and is perfect for this time of year.

card

This seller has got some great items and plenty of sales under her belt so she knows what she’s doing.  She seems like a great crafter and great contact to have in the Etsy world.  Please show her love and visit both of her shops:

Her jewelry shop and her yarn/card shop.  She has recently started a blog, so check that out.  And you can find her on Twitter as well.  Best of luck to you Catrix and thank you for allowing me to feature you on my blog!  You have amazing talent and I hope that you continue to be successful with both your shops.
