Custom Orders and Crazy Schedules

So far 2010 has been a positive one although it busy.  I had a long list of things I wanted to accomplish this year from a personal and business perspective and I can’t believe it’s almost March already!  I’m finding the stress level increasing and I need to figure out a way to calm that down a bit before I overload.

The hardest part about starting Perfectly Paper is having a full time job outside of it.  While I’m lucky that I get to work from home and I don’t lose 2 hours a day commuting in terrible Los Angeles traffice like my husband, I still lose countless hours working for a paycheck while I’d rather be crafting.  Oh the dreams of one day being able to quit my day job!

This year started out with our friend and roommate moving into his own place which meant I got my second bedroom back, which has now been converted into a craft room/office.  I’ll take pictures and post in the next week once it is a little neater.

So far this year my orders for paper flowers have been more than I expected.  The wedding order which I already blogged about was my first of the year and a big one.  I currently have another large order on the tissue side of my product line which is currently keeping me more than busy.  I’m working day and night to get this order completed and shipping by this weekend which is not an easy task.  I’m confident I can do it and can’t wait to be done with this order so I can focus on some marketing efforts.  I have so much planned this year to help me get work and I’m finding I can’t even start on it due to orders I have.  I guess it is a very good thing when I have business without doing the other aspects – but I hope to get to it soon!

I know I haven’t been on this darn blog in forever and I’m trying to find time to get back into it.  Hopefully once I get this order done and I get back from a business trip I can get back into the swing of things.  For now, I thought I’d share a few pictures of the order I’m working on right now.  I’m working on 10 centerpieces at the moment and these are the pomanders that are also part of the order.  I hope to have pictures of the centerpieces up later this week.

A Perfectly Paper Wedding

I received an order a couple weeks ago to do some flowers for a wedding this June.  The order was for a couple bridal bouquets, a flower girl basket and some boutonnieres.  The wedding market is what I really want to get into, although I haven’t had time to use all of the new supplies I have!

I thought I’d share some pictures for this order and hopefully I’ll see some pictures from the actual wedding in the coming months.

I love the Simon’s Cat cartoons.  If you haven’t seen them before, look for more of them on YouTube.

Friday Favorites – 2/5/10

Getting to this post a bit late in the day – been a bit busy today!

Trying something new.  I’m going to try to do my weekly favorites among a theme now and put together an Etsy mini so it looks nicer.  This week – Steam Punk!

Featured Seller – Posy Moe

This week we’re featuring Posy Moe.  Check out her shop to find tons of great handknit products!  She has way too many products I like to show them all to you, but I’ve picked out a few of my favorites to entice you to check out the rest.  Great work!!  She has Valentine’s Day items and sales so you have plenty of reasons to visit her shop!

When did you first start making handmade products?

I’ve been knitting and crocheting since I was 7, and sewing since about 11 or 12. I started making handmades as a career move in Summer 2009. I was knitting small coin purses and tams for a local art shop. Then in July, I opened an Etsy shop. But I didn’t really start to focus on stocking and promoting it until November.

What makes your products unique?

You know, I remember the days of grand old department stores — Bergdorf’s, Macy’s, Marshall Field’s here in Chicago– when you walked in and just felt this sense of excitement and amazement because everywhere you looked there was something wonderful to look at. That’s the feeling I’m trying to create with my shop. A feeling of, “Oh look, they have THIS here!” I’m looking to fit in somewhere between luxury and flea market. Things that are unique and artistic, but not expensive. My knits are functional, but also artistic. I don’t know how unique a knitted hat is, but I think it makes my shop unique. This totally goes against all the advice out there to pick a niche, or signature product and focus on it. I’ve never been one for focusing on any one thing for long. LOL.

What item are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of the Les Oiseaux Needle-felted Tote Bag. It was a labor of love from hand knitting the body of the bag, picking out the leather handles and painstakingly reproducing these wonderful watercolors by J.J. Audubon. I think it turned out looking all at once modern and a little old fashioned.

a2What’s your goal for the new year?
My goal for the new year is 500 sales. Seems like a long shot to me at the moment when I’m at 4 sales, but I’m determined to make being an Etsy seller a full time career and 500 sales this year would be a good start towards that.

Why should someone buy your products?

Someone should buy my products if they consider themselves to be maybe a little artsy, odd at times, and delighted by unexpected details.

Here’s your chance to pimp your online persona (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.).
I am totally pimping on Facebook: http://facebook.com/posymoe and Twitter: http://twitter.com/posymoe and I have a blog that is about knitting and crafting with fibers, but other things pop up there all the time. I am, after all, a lover of the sometimes odd. Pocketfulla Posy Blog:http://pocketfullaposy.squarespace.com

Anything else we should know?
Here’s a couple. I’m the newest columnist for TryHandmade.com. I’m writing a feature called In My Town, and it debuts Friday January 29th under my real name, Angela Walters.  Check it out here!

Also, my oldest daughter is quite the artist and crafter, so expect to start seeing some of her handmade cloth dolls being listed in the future!u about myself!

Stop. Who would cross the Stairs of Smith must answer me these questions three, ere the other side he see.

What….is your name?   What….is your quest?  What…is the capital of Assyria?
